Living in Tokyo

Tokyo is one of the largest cities in the world. It is served by two international airports (Haneda and Narita), both of which provide easy access to the city.

Tokyo is a dynamic mix of modernity and tradition: the latest technology and ancient crafts; buildings of modern design sit side-by-side with ancient temples; the bustling metro compared to peaceful parks and gardens. Living in Tokyo is a new experience every day.

The city has become increasingly multicultural in the last 10 years.and there are now approximately 420,000 foreigners living in Tokyo (based on 2009 statistics).

Security

Tokyo is one of the safest cities in the world. While necessary precautions should be taken as in any other urban area, there is considerably less theft and crime compared to other urban areas around the world.

History

Originally called Edo, Tokyo became the political center of Japan in 1603, and replaced Kyoto as the capital of Japan in 1868. Tokyo has grown into a major center of culture and economy, surviving major fires in the Edo period, a devastating earthquake in 1923, and bombings during WWII.
